A Note On Transliteration: Pinyin & Wade-Giles Systems

There are two systems currently in use for Romanizing Chinese characters. The older Wade-Giles system gives us the English words “Taoism” and “chi." The newer pinyin system - from the same Chinese characters that produced "Taoism" and "chi" - gives us, instead, “Daoism” and “qi." On this website you’ll see primarily the newer pinyin versions. The one notable exception is "Tao" and "Taoism," which are still much more commonly recognized than "Dao" and "Daoism."
