Koi Fish

swimming in a sea of surplus!

Koi fish ponds are a standard component of Oriental gardens. In the context of the Chinese New Year, they are another symbol of prosperity.

Koi Fish symbolize surplus – having more than enough for the coming year. The colorful fish appear not only in garden ponds; one also finds images of them in Chinese landscape paintings and – during Chinese New Year's celebration – on cards, calligraphies and decorated food.

The fifth day of the New Year is when the gods of prosperity (e.g. Cai Shen) descend from the heavens, and this is celebrated with the Jie Cai Ceng: the "Welcoming the Gods of Wealth and Prosperity" festival.
