The Healing Power of Sound (and how to turn your computer into a prayer-wheel)
Central to Taoist cosmology is the understanding that all that exists is - in its essence - energy, vibration, qi. From Yin Qi and Yang Qi - the primordial feminine and masculine energies - emerge the energy of the Five Elements, which in their various combinations give rise to the "ten thousand things": the kaleidescope of shape and color, sound, taste and smell and texture that each of us calls "our world."
Not surprising, then, that the use of sound - the vibrations created by our voices and/or musical instruments - is an important aspect of Taoist practice. Ceremonial Taoism's chanting of morning and evening rites, and the Inner Alchemy practice of "Healing Sounds" are two well-known examples of using sound to create internal or external sacred space. Chanting plays a central role in countless Taoist rituals, including this prosperity ritual. In this lovely video, Bon Master Tenzin Wangyal introduces us to the practice of using seed-syllables to awaken specific energetic centers in the body. Crystal singing bowls can be a particularly potent and beautiful tool for spiritual practice and sound-healing.
One of the most interesting of contemporary sound healers is Tom Kenyon - whose "acoustic brain research" makes for fascinating reading. Tom works with sacred chants and toning inspired by all the world's Wisdom Traditions. From his website you can listen to a sampling of this exquisite work.
FUN AND MERIT
When you find a prayer or chant that you resonate with strongly, you can use its vibration to turn your computer into a prayer-wheel!

I can relate to sounds affecting our energy. We see it with music. Various melodies can soothe or incite. And I believe when we are in harmony with the Earth’s vibrations we find balance and attract positive energy into our lives. It’s a beautiful thing!
Thanks for your comment! Yes, music is such a powerful tool … For me, ten minutes of Mozart is all it takes to reconnect with my natural state of joyful sweet expansion.
