The Moon That Is The Heart’s Pivot

Tuesday September 11, 2007

The Tang Dynasty was a high-point for Chinese arts and culture in general, and – in particular – for Chinese poetry. Wang Wei, Li Po and Tu Fu are among the more well-known of the many great poets of this era. Another wonderful Tang Dynasty Taoist poet is Han Shan. One of my favorite of Han Shan’s poems is the following, tremoring with the resonance of Taoist cosmology

Sitting alone in peace
Before these cliffs
The full moon is
Heaven’s beacon
The ten-thousand things
Are all reflections
The moon originally
Has no light
Wide open
The spirit of itself is pure
Hold fast to the void
Realize its subtle mystery
Look at the moon like this
The moon that is the heart’s
pivot

Enjoy!
